God, You Are: 20 Promises from the Psalms for Kids by William R. Osborne, illustrated by Brad Woodard. Crossway, 2023, 48 pages.
Reading Level: Picture Book, ages 4-8
Recommended for: ages 4-8 as a read-aloud
God is too big for even adult minds to comprehend, so it’s no wonder parents struggle to introduce Him to their kids. The details of a busy life often leave little room for deeper thoughts, making it doubly important to set aside quiet times of reflection, such as the half-hour before bed when moms and dads tuck in their little ones and listen to their prayers. This little book is meant to provide substance for such times. Each of these 20 short devotionals takes a passage from the Psalms that demonstrates God’s character in relation to us. What does God’s immutability mean to a small child? Or his omnipresence? Or his sovereignty?
God, You Are breaks down those big words and concepts into terms a child can understand. Each promise is reinforced by a New Testament verse and followed by a short prayer. Illustrations are simple but not simplistic: relatable and often powerful representations of Refuge, Fortress, Shield, Rock, Help, etc. Parents may read the whole devotional for older kids or summarize the content for younger ones while they look at the pictures together. Prayers may read to the child or repeated by the child. And all can be reviewed again and again.
