    Not Doing So Good?

January 29, 2021 / Comments Off on Not Doing So Good?

As it pertains to mothering. I keep thinking, “What have I done? What have I done to make my child act like this?” With this line of questioning in my heart, I try to fix myself. I try to act better. I try to talk nicer. I try to hug more. I try to lean in when I talk. I try to soften my voice. I try to share my feelings. I try to listen better. And, when that doesn’t work, I ask myself again, “Where did I go wrong?” Ever been there? Ever tried your hardest, only to feel like you’re going nowhere? Not succeeding? I feel guilty. But, the one simple…

    What to Read After Mulan

January 28, 2021 / Comments Off on What to Read After Mulan

Perhaps you have watched the stunning new Mulan movie (available for free streaming now on Disney+). The gorgeous cinematography would have been lovely on the big screen. My teens loved the animated film and were eager to see the update. My husband and I enjoy movies like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, so we were also eager to see it. Mulan did not disappoint. Hayley also saw it, and we discussed the movie over Christmas break. In a sea of feminist plots and pro-woman narratives, we felt that Mulan handled itself well. Chinese actresses played key roles (as opposed to white American actresses), the film mirrored other Chinese films stylistically (such…

Mulan: Before the Sword by Grace Lin

January 28, 2021 / Comments Off on Mulan: Before the Sword by Grace Lin

The “prequel” to the new Disney Mulan movie, this middle grades story weaves together Chinese legend with Mulan’s own tale to great effect. Mulan: Before the Sword (Disney Mulan) by Grace Lin. Disney Press, 2020. 384 pages. Reading Level: Middle Grades, age 10-12 Recommended For: Ages 8 and up Mulan is a well-recognized figure in modern American culture. After all, in the animated film, she (along with her trusty dragon sidekick) saves the emperor! Cue the funny one-liners and fantastic soundtrack. Mulan was actually based on a real Chinese legend and is similar, in some ways, to the Western character of Joan of Arc. In Mulan: Before the Sword, Grace…

    Showing God

January 28, 2021 / Comments Off on Showing God

Hope that is seen is not hope; for who hopes for what he already sees? — Romans 8:24 Do you have a preconceived idea about how God is going to meet your needs? Throughout the years, I’ve encountered a number of people who have explained how they believed the Lord should answer their petitions…. The post Showing God appeared first on FaithGateway.

    Healing Is a Process

January 28, 2021 / Comments Off on Healing Is a Process

God Stopped for Her The closest communion with God comes, I believe, through the sacrament of tears. Just as grapes are crushed to make wine and grain to make bread, so the elements of this sacrament come from the crushing experiences of life. ~ Ken Gire, Windows of the Soul Aaron was Gail’s only son,… The post Healing Is a Process appeared first on FaithGateway.

Dancing at the Pity Party by Tyler Feder

January 27, 2021 / Comments Off on Dancing at the Pity Party by Tyler Feder

Raw, funny, and honest, Dancing at the Pity Party is a close look at grief after the loss of a mother. Dancing at the Pity Party: a Dead Mom Graphic Memoir by Tyler Feder. Dial, 2020, 201 pages. Reading Level: Teen, ages 12-15 Recommended for: ages 12-up Our culture has a bizarre relationship with death. We don’t like to talk about it except in bland platitudes and over-the-top horror movies. Death is sad and sometimes really scary, but oscillating between euphemisms and torture porn does not a healthy relationship with mortality make!Dancing at the Pity Party Tyler Feder was only 19 when she lost her mother to cancer. She had…

    January 27, 2021 / Comments Off on Dear God…

    The Leadership Genius of Jesus

January 27, 2021 / Comments Off on The Leadership Genius of Jesus

Titles and Deeds Let me tell you about the worst boss I ever saw. He was given authority prematurely, and he abused it wildly. He harshly ordered people when he should have gently directed. He bullied people when he should have asked nicely. He whispered when he should have screamed. He delegated poorly, and then… The post The Leadership Genius of Jesus appeared first on FaithGateway.
