Superman Name Drops THIS Christian Rock Band in New Movie! SPOILER
There’s a new Superman in town — and he’s name-dropping Christian rock legends in the middle of Metropolis. James Gunn’s highly anticipated Superman movie hits theaters today, and we were first in line to see it. Verdict? It’s a surprisingly heartfelt movie about what it really means to be family… plus some hilarious jokes and great action!
Other than a few mild profanities sprinkled here and there, this is a big, fun, family-friendly summer movie. We’d suggest ages 11 and up.
SPOILER ALERT!
One of our favorite moments is a delightfully awkward argument between Lois Lane and Clark Kent about between the two of them – who truly is punk rock. Lois claims she was a punk kid back in the day but calls Clark out as a poser when he tries to defend his street cred by saying he listens to punk bands like “the P.O.D.s.” Yes — P.O.D. gets a Superman shoutout! The same “Satellite”-era, radio-rock warriors we all blasted in our Discman back in the early 2000s.
(We haven’t 100% confirmed that’s exactly what he says, but our own ears and thousands of rock fans seem to agree.)
Lois is having none of it, firing back that P.O.D. is just “radio rock” and not real punk. Ouch. But for all of us who grew up debating who was punk enough in the ‘90s, this scene is an instant classic. Clark Kent may be able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, but when it comes to defending his playlist, he’s a nu-metal nerd like the rest of us — and we love him for it.
Musically, the movie leans more on a grand score than a jukebox of hits like Gunn’s Guardians films, but this sly nod to Clark’s Christian rock roots in Smallville, KS earns the new Superman a special place in our “CCM in Pop Culture” archives. Great job James Gunn!
It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s a… SATEEEELLLLLITTTTTTTEEEEE.
