Jason Reynolds is an author we’ve kept an eye on ever since his debut in 2015 with When I Was the Greatest. That novel, and All American Boys (which he co-wrote with Brendan Kelly) were firmly in the YA category with mature themes and some harsh language. But Jason Reynolds’s “Track” series, based on his own experiences as a middle-grader track team member, is not just suitable for middle grades—it’s excellent. I am impressed with this Christian romantic novella. I usually don’t read novellas as I generally find them unrealistic or rushed. This one was great. The pacing of the story was very good. The characters were developed well and the plot was good.The story is of the mail order bride variety. The location is Nome, Alaska at the end of the nineteenth century, during the gold rush. A new teen fantasy novel draws inspiration from Susan Pevensie’s rejection of Narnia to spin a similar tale. In the almost 70 years since C. S. Lewis published The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, the series has attracted heat as well as love.  Uniquely so: Tolkien, his friend and colleague, gets no barbs for the Lord of the Rings trilogy, nor J. M. Barrie for Peter Pan or P.L.
